Striped Cardi Party

little black dress striped cardigan

One great thing about wearing a versatile piece like a little black dress is that you can easily improvise new looks without even trying. I’ve had this cardigan for years and NEVER thought of pairing it with a dress. I’ve always worn it with a t-shirt and jeans. I guess sometimes we limit the roles for certain items in our closets, but if you want to maximize the potential (why am I starting to sound like a finance seminar? lol) of your wardrobe, you’ve gotta think outside the box and wear your clothes differently!

Building a Better Closet Step 4: Organize

20140320_053942000_iOS
It’s organizing time! This can either be the easiest or hardest step, depending on the state of you closet.

1. Remove all of the clothes from your closet.
2. Designate areas in your closet for each type of clothing (casual, work, church, etc.) For me, one side of my closet is dressy clothes and the other side is casual clothes.
3. Separate the clothes by tops, pants, skirts, etc. and hang accordingly.
4. Group accessories such as belts, scarves, purses, and shoes together.

That’s it!

This may take a while, so don’t be discouraged. If you can’t manage it all at once, break it into smaller tasks such has casual clothes today, dressy clothes tomorrow, shoes after that, etc.

What’s your best clothing organizational tip? Comment and let me know! -Tyler

LBD Look: Sock it to Me

one little black dress white socks and black heels
I admit it. I’m already starting to run out of ideas! This is the fifth LBD look, I’ve put together for this blog and I’ve already done a lot of my favorites. ( One of my friends at church even asked if I only wear black dresses now :P) We know what that means:

Time to get creative.

One trend I’ve seen on a lot of the fashion blogs is the socks + heels look that I’ve always wanted to try, so I figured there’s no time like the present 🙂

Adding a white sweater as well gave it kind of a school girl look, but it worked for me.

Building a Better Closet Step 2: Revamp

building a better closet step 2 one little black dress
Cleaning out your closet is a great opportunity to breathe new life into old clothes. This is a time when you should gather up everything that has an holes or missing buttons and decide if you want to repair or donate them. If you want to repair them, do it right away so that the clothes can quickly go from being closet clutter to functional pieces of clothing again. If you find yourself waiting too long to get an item fixed, that may be a sign that you just need to let it go.

Another great thing you can do with items in your closet is turn them into something totally new. There are plenty of fun projects that you can do with your clothes such as

1. Turn a t-shirt into a tote bag
(Pro Tip: if you want an even faster and easier way to do this.,
just tie up the bottom of the shirt with a hair elastic.  It’s temporary
and takes just a few seconds)
2. Turn an old sweater into a hat (no-sew video tutorial)
3. DIY high-low skirt
4. Spray painted T-shirt

You could even try just wearing your clothes in different creative ways, like wearing a skirt as a dress.

The point is, if you’re bored with your clothes. Try having some fun with them. For me, building a better closet not only lifts a burden, but opens up the window for new projects as well.

5 Essential Accessories for your LBD

5 essentials for your LBD
Here’s a list of 5 things you must (well, you know, like… if you want…) have on hand for your little black dress!
1. Red Pumps

red peep-toe heels little black dressRed pumps can take your little black dress from 0 to 60 in an instant with a bright pop of cheery red.

2. Sheer Tights

Sheer tights will ensure that you legs look smooth and sleek in your equally smooth and sleek LBD.

3. A Great Purse

On days when you don’t have time to put much thought into your LBD look, make sure you grab a nice purse! If you can find a bag nice enough, it make everything else you’re wearing look that much better.

4. The Right Belt

Even if the rest of your outfit is perfect, adding the wrong belt can throw the whole look off. Make sure you take your time and pick out a belt that compliments both the dress and your figure while tying the outfit together.

5. Great Hair

LBD Look: Red Velvet

little black dress red heels

So my red pumps make yet another appearance. Too soon? Nah. 😛

I find that one of the easiest ways to accessorize a black dress is to throw in a pop or two of red. It has to been done subtly though. You don’t want to overdo it.

I also took the liberty of layering a plain black tee underneath by LBD to give it a sleeved look. Can you tell? 🙂

The dress is actually sleeveless with a deep V-shape in the back. Adding the t-shirt gives me just the amount of added modesty that I want.

LBD Look: The Cable-Knit Sweater

little black dress with cable sweater

It was extremely cold this Sabbath. So cold that extreme measures and layers had to be taken to ensure my warmth. I had a totally different outfit in mind that morning, but once I found out what the temperature was (28 degrees Fahrenheit when I woke up, 36 when these photos were taken) I changed everything and started over. I actually believe in comfort over fashion, and I believe you can have both simultaneously. Plus, I like keeping all of my extremities.

2014-02-15 14.54.09

Let me explain just how cold it was. It was so cold, that I went through all of my tights and decided that none of them were warm enough. I actually wore a pair of leggings with my dress and slid a pair of black socks underneath to make them look like tights. Nobody noticed. And if they did, I wouldn’t care.

I layered this warm cabled sweater over my little black dress to keep me warm and toasty. Would you believe that I got this sweater for just $2? Apparently even though temperatures are hovering around the low 30s, stores are flushing out their winter items right now to make room for their spring collections. Silly stores and their schedules.

Throwback: My Little White Dress

2013-02-07 21.42.32 (2)

Today’s late little blurb comes courtesy of my little white dress from once upon a time. A little white dress is almost just as versatile as a little black dress, so it’s definitely an item that can make your wardrobe feel ten times larger!

Unfortunately, this little white dress was a size too small for me and ripped in the back, so I no longer have it. I’m definitely keeping my eye out for a similar dress though.

All in all, have a great weekend and a happy early Valentine’s day everyone! 🙂

Bad Fashion Choices: The Striped-Rose Dress

Image

Sooooo, this dress. I got this dress because my cousin was getting rid of some of her clothes, and even though I didn’t like it, I took it. I had the mindset of “more clothes is better than less clothes.” This was a time in my life where I would buy clothes that I didn’t even like just because they were three dollars, a dollar, fifty cents, etc. just for the sake of having a larger wardrobe.

My boyfriend likes this dress, so I held onto it for a lot longer than I would have, but here we are three years later and I’ve recently gotten rid of it. Why? Because my new mindset is “why would I wear something that I don’t even like??”. Granted, I do still have a few items in my closet that I don’t like, but that’s mostly because those items are my warmest ones, and well, I do have to stay warm. In the future as I buy things here and there, they will be replaced and I will get rid of them.

Meet my Little Black Dress

IMG_2402

The idea for this blog came after I bought this dress from J.C. Penney. I bought it for $25 with a gift card I got for Christmas from my cousin. I’ve recently finished college and am preparing to begin my teaching career, so currently I don’t have much money. I’ve also been weeding out all of the clothes that I own that I hate, so much closet is looking a little thin right now. But that doesn’t mean I can’t still have fun with my wardrobe, right?

My philosophy when it comes to fashion is life is too short to wear clothes you don’t like. I keep what I like, and donate the rest.

A lot of people think that if you’re into fashion you need to constantly be out shopping and spending money, on a never-ending quest for newest, latest thing. I disagree. I think all you need are a few key pieces that you like and few accessories to go with them. There should be a point where you’re actually satisfied with the clothes that you own and it shouldn’t take too much money to get there.

I’m starting this blog because I’m on a journey to create as many looks as possible with this little black dress and I want to share them with you.

So, let’s meet this dress!

IMG_2400

Dress with belt: City Triangle

Purse: Lulu

Tights: George

Shoes: Mossimo

The dress comes with its own little bow belt, which I find to be adorable and just perfect for it. I also love the fullness of the skirt. It has just enough fabric that it gives the dress a very girly feel and make me want to twirl around. I’m wearing it here with my favorite pair of shoes and one of my favorite bags as well.
