5 essentials for your LBD
Here’s a list of 5 things you must (well, you know, like… if you want…) have on hand for your little black dress!
1. Red Pumps

2. Sheer Tights

Sheer tights will ensure that you legs look smooth and sleek in your equally smooth and sleek LBD.

3. A Great Purse

On days when you don’t have time to put much thought into your LBD look, make sure you grab a nice purse! If you can find a bag nice enough, it make everything else you’re wearing look that much better.

4. The Right Belt

Even if the rest of your outfit is perfect, adding the wrong belt can throw the whole look off. Make sure you take your time and pick out a belt that compliments both the dress and your figure while tying the outfit together.

5. Great Hair

Honestly, sometimes great hair = confidence. And confidence is the best accessory you could ever wear with a little black dress 🙂

LBD Look: It’s Black, It’s White

one little black dress white white bag

When wearing a little black dress, you always run the risk of having kind of a bleak “funeral” type look if you aren’t careful with your accessories. For this LBD look, I paired black and white accessories with my dress to brighten up my look. I love how I was able to find a perfect belt and shoe match. I’ve had them both in my closet for years, but never wore them at the same time. My LBD was the first to ever bring them together 🙂

This white purse is my favorite. It was definitely the star of  the show today because its bright color changed the whole look dramatically. Oh, and this is the first time I wore my lace gloves in public. They made me feel like a perfectly classy lady.

Building a Better Closet Step 1: Minimize

building a better minimalist closet one little black dress

No one likes the feeling of having a closet full of clothes and nothing to wear. Many people think that the way to solve this problem is to simply go out and buy more clothes, picking up whatever looks cute when you go out. I actually don’t think that solves the problem, I think that causes the problem. If you want to open a closet and see plenty of options for things to wear, you have to be very intentional about it. The first step is to minimize.

So here a few things to remove from your closet to get started:

1. The items that don’t fit. When we lose or gain weight we tend to hold onto our old clothes “just in case.” Do yourself a favor and remove these items. They’re just taking up precious space.
2. The items you no longer like. We all seem to hold onto several clothing items that we know we don’t like. Maybe your style changed over time, or maybe you picked up something that you didn’t like just because it was on sale. I used to do that a lot too. We do we do this to ourselves? If you feel bad that you’re “wasting” clothes that you spent money on by not wearing them, don’t worry about it. Life is too short to wear clothes you don’t like.
3. Items that don’t flatter your body. It might be the shape, it might print, it might be the size. Whatever the reason, if a piece of clothing doesn’t flatter your body, get rid of it.
4. Items that just don’t match anything. Every now and then I’ll buy a skirt or a pair of shoes and never wear them because I can’t find anything in my closet to pair them with. If this goes on for too longer, it’s probably time to let go.
5. Remove any broken or unwanted hangers. I actually stumbled onto this tip while reading Living Well Spending Less. It made me realize that one thing that I really hate about my closet is all of the extra hangers, the dry cleaners hangers, the plastic hangers from the store, etc. It just make everything look so disorganized. So I’m going to follow her advice and invest in a nice set of hangers when I get the chance. I think some nice wooden hangers would improve the feel of my closet drastically 🙂

“But if I get rid of all of these things, I won’t have anything left!”

I know that feeling. If you get rid of all these items on impulse, you may regret it later, right? Let me just tell you this almost never happens, and even if you end up with just a few items left in your closet, you’ll be surprised to find that no one will really notice. Even if you wore say, the same 8 items over and over again for a month, it’s unlikely that anyone will notice. People really just aren’t that observant.

One thing that can help you get started is to fill a bag with all of the items mentioned above, and just put the item out of sight somewhere in the house. If you decide that you need something in the bag, you can always get it, but chances are that you’ll just forget about it after a while. When you finally do see and remember the bag again and you never missed it, that’s your cue to donate it.

TIP: Hold on to a few comfy tees and sweats even if they aren’t your favorite (as long as they’re comfortable). This way, on the days you stay in, you can wear your less-loved clothes and you can save your favorite pieces for days you’re out and about. If you hate seeing these items in your closet, try finding a drawer for them to live in.

My Natural Hair in All its Shapes and Forms

one little black dress curly natural hair

Ever since I’ve started this blog, a few people have complimented and inquired about my hair, requesting that I make a post about it. I decided to just share a sort of photo collage about my hair’s versatility. I don’t have a good hair day every day (by noooo means!), but when I do, it’s fun to play with 🙂

20140226_073520000_iOS

This is what my hair looks like when it’s wet. This is one of my favorite looks, and for a long time I tried really hard to make it stay this way, but by now I’ve learned to accept that my hair only looks like this for a few minutes before it turns to its true, frizzy, fluffy self:

20140226_213508000_iOS

Big difference right? My hair in its true texture is much wider, frizzier, and has more character than the wet look that I always wanted.

More hair styles:
natural hair styles one little black dress1. Two strand twists. I used to wear my hair like this allll the time, and it protected my hair and kept is soo healthy and made it grow really fast. I haven’t worn them lately though, because I’ve been lazy 😛
2. A two strand twist-out. Possibly my best hair day ever!
3. Fluffy hair. Combed out all of the curls to mimic a blow-dried look. This is the closest I’ve ever gotten my hair to being an “afro.”
4. Twist out with flat twists to one side.

#StaightHairDontCare! I only straighten my hair 2-4 times a year. It’s always fun to see how long it’s grown! 🙂

Well, that’s all folks! Let me know if you have any questions. 🙂 This is a fashion blog, but I’m happy to spotlight my hair every now and then if you want. Let me know if you want to see posts about my routine, favorite products/techniques, deep conditioner recipes, etc. And if you’d rather me just stick to fashion, you can say that too! Any feedback is welcome 🙂

Stay warm, and have a great day everyone! 🙂

LBD Look: Red Velvet

little black dress red heels

So my red pumps make yet another appearance. Too soon? Nah. 😛

I find that one of the easiest ways to accessorize a black dress is to throw in a pop or two of red. It has to been done subtly though. You don’t want to overdo it.

I also took the liberty of layering a plain black tee underneath by LBD to give it a sleeved look. Can you tell? 🙂

The dress is actually sleeveless with a deep V-shape in the back. Adding the t-shirt gives me just the amount of added modesty that I want.

Get Ready to #RockTheRedPump

“Every 47 minutes, a women is diagnosed with HIV in the United States.”

Did you know that?

Did you know that March 10 is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day?

The Red Pump Project Says:

“While great progress has been made in the area of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, women still represent 27% of all new AIDS diagnoses, with African-American women accounting for 66% of that group. In observance of NWGHAAD, we would like for you to join our 2014 Rock the Red Pump® (#RocktheRedPump) Campaign! The campaign’s goal is to generate conversation both online and offline about the issue of HIV/AIDS and how it affects women.”

Bloggers can participate in the event by registering and blogging on March 10  about what makes HIV/AIDs awareness important to you.

Everyone else can participate by wearing red pumps on March 10 to raise awareness, uploading photos to the Red Pump Project Facebook page, and using the official #RockTheRedPump hashtag!

So mark you calendars and get ready to rock those red pumps on March 10 🙂

OOTD: In a Flash

Flash t-shirt with skinny jeans and converse sneakers

I don’t dress fabulously and extravagantly every day. Most days I like to just wear a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

That’s not an apology, just a statement of the facts.

I got this tee as a Christmas gift from a friend because he knew I was a Sheldon Cooper/Big Bang Theory fan. 🙂

Today was one of the first days in a very very long time where it was warm enough to go outside without a coat. The weather was also pretty cloudy, which gave me kind of a “meh” attitude today.

Style Dare: Vintage Gloves

black lace gloves collage little black dress

Just got this pair of gloves that I ordered online and I’m bouncing off the walls with excitement. I love things that make me feel like a classy lady and these are like hitting the jackpot in that department.

When I started this blog I did some research on the iconic “little black dress” and everything kept pointing towards “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” starring Audrey Hepburn, so I watched it. Ever since watching that movie I’ve developed a new love for 50s fashion and Audrey Hepburn’s influence in general, which is why I ordered these gloves.

Everyone seems to think that wearing lacy/vintage/fancy gloves is only appropriate at weddings, Halloween parties, and high tea with the Queen of England but ohhhh am I going to prove you wrong today. Guys, there’s like a bajillion things you can do while wearing vintage gloves. You can:

1. Ride a bike

2. Sit on a bench

3. Read a book

4. Strike a pose

5. Stroll through the park

6. Be classy

I think I’ve made my point here.

LBD Look: The Cable-Knit Sweater

little black dress with cable sweater

It was extremely cold this Sabbath. So cold that extreme measures and layers had to be taken to ensure my warmth. I had a totally different outfit in mind that morning, but once I found out what the temperature was (28 degrees Fahrenheit when I woke up, 36 when these photos were taken) I changed everything and started over. I actually believe in comfort over fashion, and I believe you can have both simultaneously. Plus, I like keeping all of my extremities.

2014-02-15 14.54.09

Let me explain just how cold it was. It was so cold, that I went through all of my tights and decided that none of them were warm enough. I actually wore a pair of leggings with my dress and slid a pair of black socks underneath to make them look like tights. Nobody noticed. And if they did, I wouldn’t care.

black cable knit sweater with bow belt

I layered this warm cabled sweater over my little black dress to keep me warm and toasty. Would you believe that I got this sweater for just $2? Apparently even though temperatures are hovering around the low 30s, stores are flushing out their winter items right now to make room for their spring collections. Silly stores and their schedules.
